I have two high-spec iMacs, connected via Thunderbolt and ethernet. I go through the Compressor set up for group transcoding, tried many different settings combinations - it NEVER uses the second machine in the transcode.
Episode Pro on same machines does it no problem. Has anyone got this working in Compressor?
Are you giving Compressor a self-contained file for processing or bringing it in directly from Final Cut or Motion?

Hi Russ - yes, s-c file. Compressor is fine working alone on each iMac. just the distributed processing never works. Just seems odd that Episode is fine and Compressor is a non-starter
Both Macs have the identical versions of Compressor? In Preferences, Allow Other Computers…is on?

Mark, To be honest, I'm grasping at straws. Can you run multiple instances of Compressor on just one the machines when each of them is given a job independently? Does each work?

Each iMac only has the option of 1 instance...

Would that be one additional instance? That would be a total of two, which is what I'd expect for an i7 iMac.

I'm not in the office now but from memory, I select the additional Instances button and the only option is 1.
Does Compressor distribution work for you / others?

I haven't tried with the 4.1 versions because the only machine I could test it with is running an earlier OS/ It's purposely frozen in that state and will be some time before it's upgraded. I have considered installing 10.9 on an external drive with a FCP X and Compressor and booting from that. If I have the time I'll try it and post the results.
In the meantime, I hope someone else will have some theories on why your processing setup isn't working and chime in.
Finally, just to add I think a lot of folks have taken the simpler route and opted for multiple instances to speed up their work.

Thanks for your input Russ - as mentioned I have Episode cluster working well across both machines so it's not mission-critical. Just a shame there doesn't seem to be proper support from Apple for this - the Help / manual has no troubleshooting that I can find.

I have has all sorts of issues.
I have settled on static IP addresses
I disable auto file sharing and manually connect my portable to my IMac hard drives using the "connect to server" function.
This has been the stablest configuration for me, and works because my portable is next to my Imac.
It has been a difficult to get the distributed processing to work.
Just wondering if anyone has Compressor doing clusters / network encoding, on Yosemite? I still have Compressor on my two iMacs showing that they are both connected in the network encoding monitor, but jobs are never shared between the two. Episode still does this with no problems.
Could you post a screen shot of what happens in the Action window when you're running a batch? View with all the disclosures twirled open. Thanks.
