I just purchased FCPX but it crashes every single time I attempt to open the effects panel. I have verified my system is qualified, tried removing preferences, restarting, even reinstalling the application per Apple's support docs. Nothing fixes it. The crash happens on both 10.9.3 and 10.9.4, and ProApps Codecs are installed. Has anyone else run into this?
What are the complete specifics of your system? Are there third party effects installed?
You've pointed me in the right direction—it appears that one (or more) of my 3rd party AU plugins for Logic are causing the problem. So, 132 to test before I find the culprit. Blargh. That will be several hours of my life I won't get back (btw they all pass AU validation in Logic).
Tokyo Dawn Labs Feedback Compressor II is the problem child.

As you can see here other people (like me) seem to have the same problem. Certain Audio Unit plugins (in my case PredatorFX) screw up FCP, in a way that it sometimes gets stuck while opening FCP, showing only the splash screen. And it also confuses the FX tab in FCP. In FCP 10.1.1 it got confused with the photos tab, and now in FCP 10.1.2 it plain crashes the program! Pretty powerful stuff, those little audio plugins. I disabled the culprit by taking it out of /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins, and all seems to be well now.

I should buy you a car or something. Tokyo Labs Feedback Compressor was the culprit plug-in for me, too. Every time I tried to open the Effects Browser, FCP would instantly crash. Frustrating!!!

Took out my PredatorFX, don't have Feedback Compressor and it's still crashing. Guess I too will now waste hours of my life going through the 265 AU plugins I have trying to find the culprit. Sure would be nice if the had an audio manager in the preferences like Logic.
Thank you for this! I've been stuck with the same problem all day and this is the ONLY solution that worked! Tokyo Labs Feedback Compressor II was making me very angry. Now it's gone and all fine.

Thanx so many times - I removed ALL of the AU plugins that I was´t using in any of my GarageBand projects. So only three of them remained (all related to stereo width) and now the Effects Panel in FCPX works fine.

I had this same problem and I got rid of some 3rd party AUs and that worked for me too.
It may have been Tokyo Dawn Labs Feedback Compressor II for me too, but not sure as I removed a few.
Removing just the TDR Feedback compressor solved my crashing problem. Was dreading going thru my 150+ AU plugs which all work fine in my DAW. Jon, you da man! Thanks so much!

Went through dozens upon dozens of plugins one by one and the TDR plugin causes this effects crash and "RESTORING WINDOW LAYOUT" error upon reopening.

Here's the fix....Go into your HD>Library>Audio>Plugins>Components and move them elsewhere...Go to FCP and see if it fixed it....Then add em back one by one....THIS WORKED FOR ME!!!!!
Yep, took me 45 minutes to go through 91 plugins, but it least I know the culprit, and now my system is stable!
