I am running at Mac OS X v10.5.8 right now and I need to get to 10.6.8 to connect my new printer. I have an install DVD for 10.6.4-is it ok to install this? And then I will be able to download 10.6.8 for free? Or do I need just a plain OS X 10.6 DVD?
Where did the Snow Leopard install DVD come from?
If it came with another Mac, it is hardware specific to that Mac and can't be used on another because it does not have the drivers for any other Mac then original one.

1. That DVD is specific to the model of Mac it originally shipped with and can’t be used to upgrade. There are no retail 10.6.4 DVDs.
2. Yes, noting #1 and #3.
3. You need a retail Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.6.3 DVD. The online Apple Store sells these.

First, 10.6 will only install on an Intel processor Mac...so if you have a PPC such as G5, G4 or G3 it will not install.
Second, where did you get a 10.6.4 DVD? The retail version is 10.6.3. If that is really a 10.6.4 DVD and it has a grey painted disk, it is a machine dependent version and will not install unless you have an identical machine to the one it came with.
The retail version of Snow Leopard is available from the on-line Apple store for $20. Once installed, you can do the software update directly to 10.6.8 for free.

Appreciate the responses everyone! Yes it's apparently the retail grey painted disk, I got it from a school so probably came with a specific machine. I will not install this! From what everyone is saying it sounds like I need to just pay and buy the 10.6 DVD then download the 10.6.8. Thanks for all of the help!

Once you get it updated, you can run the combo update. Saves time from Using Software Update.
