How can I recover data on my old power book hard drive when the hard drive is not being recognized by my iMac after being connected via usb?

USB won't work. You need to either use an ethernet cable and set up file sharing on both, or use FireWire Target Disk Mode t omount the PowerBook's hard drive on your iMac desktop.
