My phone is frozen during the ios 7.1.2 update. What should I do?

I tried updating my phone to the new 7.1.2. It has been hours now, and has not progressed in the update. It will not shut off either. What should I do?

Hi cgravseth,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you were updating your iPhone and now it is completely unresponsive. The following article has some great information for troubleshooting this situation. Numbers 1 and 2 are irrelevant or you have already tried with no success. Start with number 3 and try to reset the iPhone. If that doesn’t work move down to steps 5 and 6.

iOS: Not responding or does not turn on

http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3281

  1. If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
  2. If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
  3. If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
  4. If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
    1. If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
    2. Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
    3. If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
    4. If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
  5. If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
    1. Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
    2. If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more aboutrestoring iOS software.
    3. If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
  6. If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.

Please feel free to let me know if you need further assistance.

Have a great day,

-Joe

This is during the update. This is a problem with many people that did the 7.1.2 update. None of these solutions work as you are in an update screen. You can't hold the power down and get it to do anything. You have to do the hard reset which is holding the power down and the "home" button down at the same time for approximately 5 seconds. It will then restart and you will be good to go.

Pretty ridiculous that a bug this big got past developers. I see another update in the near future.

::frustrated:: I just spent 4 HOURS without use of my phone. Wouldn't be a big deal if I had a landline.

Same issue here. iOS update 7.1.2, just did it today. During update it restarts and has a progress indicator and the Apple logo on screen, but the progress indicator just locks up. After some time I tried to turn off the phone using the power button to no avail.

So I found your post here and sure enough, when you press and hold the power button and the home button at the same time for about 5 seconds the screen turns off, then I waited a few seconds and used the power button to turn the phone back on, I seen a progress indicator again and the Apple logo but this time the phone starts up and lets me log in.

I preliminarily checked a few settings in the Settings app and everything seems the same way I had it set. Contacts are there. Phone works. Checked the Settings app > General > Software Update, and it says that 7.1.2 is the current version of iOS and that it is up to date.

Weird. Thanks for the solution!

(This is why I try to always back up my PC's and my iPhone before I update them, in case I need to restore them like they were if something breaks!).
