Having installed upgrade 10.9.4 this morning I lost all audio across the computer and it applications. On checking the System Preferences - Sound, there were no input or output devices found. Any help in reinstalling them would be appreciated.
I had somewhat the same issue. The audio icon (top right of the screen) was greyed out with no means to adjust volume nor mute/unmute volume. A shut down (power off), then restart of the Macbook got it working again. Give this a try.
Did you verify that your computer speakers work? Mine "fixed itself", but it turns out, it set itself up to have audio output go through my Apple TV instead. I still have NO audio input or output for my MacBook.

Thank to those that tried to help, unfortunately there was no easy answer, I took the computer into the Apple Store and did a complete reload of the Mavericks software, this solved the problem.
