Jul 6, 2014 3:10 PM in response to Camille77NYby tonefox,I'll back up my work as often as possible to prevent any more loss,
Absolutely essential. Well done.
but I don't have the time for the trouble with having to restore constantly. It's bothersome and mentally/emotionally draining.
Backing up does not necessitate restoring. I have never found either to be an emotionally draining.
Since the birth of computers, backing up is the only way to be confident that no data will be lost, and therefore there is no need to worry about any software or hardware problems at all, they become merely inconvenient.

Jul 6, 2014 5:48 PM in response to enosmacby Lawrence Finch,Dire warnings have been around for a long time. If we all took the "don't update" advice we'd all still be on 1.0.0. The fact is that a few phones will have a problem after updating, and that, unless it is hardware related, it can always be fixed. If there were an actual problem in the update you would see tens of thousands of posts about it, not a few dozen. Here's what I'm taling about:
Don't update to ver 2.0.2 on your I Phone!!!
Re: 2.1.1 can't do adjustments now. Don't update to 2.1.1
Re: Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update
Re: iPhone 3GS 3.1.2 update- crashes Apps installed from App Store
Re: Iphone 3G wrecked after update to IOS4... Don't update!
Don't update your iphone 4 to 4.0.1, its might kill your phone
DON'T UPDATE TO 4.0.2 but if you did try this
Re: DON'T Update your iPhone (thread from 2009)
Re: iPhone 4 crashing since ios 6.0 update (from 2012)
Re: Words for warning: Don't update your 4S to iOS 7 unless you don't want you wifi to work

Jul 6, 2014 7:27 PM in response to petermac87by ericfromwellington,Hi petermac87 I have tried a full reinstall 8 times, given up thinking I will restore from backup, so most of the attempts have been to a new state.
Nothing, I get a notification tone, so have to mute the iPad and a faint backlight as opposed to black when turned off. No Apple symbol or anything else useful.
I am resorting to dropping the iPad off to an Apple dealership to try to fix
Disappointed as the iPad worked fine prior to the update, now I have to pay to get it going (if it can get going again)
Other iPhone and iPad friends are also having issues.
Very poor post testing release of an update by the Apple Dev team

Refer to Lawrence's Post above. We hear the same in every update of iOS and OSX and always will. A few have issues, most don't. That is not to say tat it is not annoying!! I have so far installed the update for self, family and friends in iPhone 4Ss to 5S and 5C phones as well as iPads. In total? 12 iPads and 22 phones. (living centrally can be a pain! lol) and yet not one issue at all with the update. Not a single hang or crash. I do find it easier to just update through the General>Software update selection on the mobile device itself as in the past I have downloaded whilst connected to iTunes and at times have had to download it two or three times before it took. May be an issue for some.
Good luck
Pete

Jul 6, 2014 8:18 PM in response to petermac87by ericfromwellington,I agree, updates need to happen
However if the platforms are all the same, then why don't all the updates work as planned...
My guess is that the platforms are not all the same, and may have something to do with hardware batches.
Anyway thank you for the feedback, it may just be time to buy a new iPad (maybe the mini) :-)

Jul 7, 2014 5:43 PM in response to Balzer_Jby Lawrence Finch,So did you just come here to whine, or do you plan to troubleshoot the problem and fix it?
-
Jul 7, 2014 6:23 PM in response to Lawrence Finchby Ruthannie,I'm here to whine. Stupid update bricked my iPhone 5S. Of course before that I had lots of fun including a kernel panic.
I've tried every solution I've run across and nothing has worked so far. My fingers have dents from holding down the wake/sleep button. Doing a DFU now, hope it solves it.
And owing to the complete flakiness of software updates, my iPad 4 is thankfully fine. So go figure.

Jul 7, 2014 7:39 PM in response to Ruthannieby petermac87,What was the kernel panic on your iPhone? How did you identify it and that it was a kernel panic?

Jul 7, 2014 8:51 PM in response to enosmacby fqw102,I updated my mother's iPhone 5s for her just the other day without any hiccups and she has not reported any issues to me. However, I tried to update my iPhone 5s tonight and all the bad things happened. It's gotten to the point where my laptop is no longer recognizing that my phone is plugged into the USB port. I was on the phone for 2 hours with the nicest Apple Care Rep whose mind was blown that this was happening. Thank goodness I did a back up first (praying it isn't corrupted). I am headed to the Genius Bar tomorrow and I am praying they can reboot the phone, restore to factory settings, and then restore from my last update (which was iOS 7.1.1). Will not download this onto my phone if I can manage to get back up and running.
One would think that this level of technology from the company would be better, no? Maybe don't roll out updates that break most of our devices?
Advice: Pass on this update.

Jul 7, 2014 9:00 PM in response to fqw102by gail from maine,Have you tried resetting the device yourself? Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the reset is complete, the Home screen will redisplay. Go to Settings>General>About and see what Version is showing for your device to see if the update actually completed.
Cheers,

Pete
It was a white screen of system information and code with words "debugger called", "panic", and "kernel abort" or something to that effect. I did the DFU fix while connected to iTunes and several times got a 4005 error. I gave up for awhile, then the phone would turn itself on, but hang on the Apple screen. Numerous times of holding the buttons and getting the same. Then I had a blue screen (of death perhaps?). The phone coming on, but hanging on the Apple screen. A few times my usual locked screen came up asking for my pass code, but the screen was unresponsive to touch. Crazy!
OK, so now it's the next morning and I try to turn it on or force a reboot by holding home and sleep buttons, the unlock screen flashes a couple times. After a bit of that, I can suddenly enter my pass code and now the phone appears to be in normal working order. I was going to make an appointment at the Genius bar this morning, but now don't appear to need it. I'd rather not go into the city anyway.

Jul 8, 2014 8:54 AM in response to Aezanoby tpmccabe,After upgrading to 7.1.2 my iPhone was not functioning. I performed the Restore and now have a base version iPhone that functions, but none of my purchased apps are on the phone. I have had iCloud auto-backup set on my phone and I have checked that it was working numerous times, so I assume that I have a very recent iCloud backup. I am not sure what to do next; I assume that I need to recover from iCloud, but don't know how. Can you offer any help? I fear that the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store will be booked up for a week or more.
-
Jul 8, 2014 12:59 PM in response to tpmccabeby Lawrence Finch,To restore an iCloud backup, on the phone go to Settings/iCloud and turn off Find my iPhone. Then go to Settings/General/Reset - Erase all content and settings. When the reset completes you will go through the setup process again. Along the way you will be asked if you want to restore from an iCloud backup.
