Q: IOS 7.1.2 is buggy, don't update

After updating to 7.1.2 phone started to randomly restart for a couple of hours, then finally it shut off.  Now its stuck in the "Connect to Itunes" and wanting me to restore to factory then restore.  Great.  Thanks.  Luckily I have an iCloud backup this morning, but I'll have to reinstall all the apps.  For what I've seen so far, this update is buggy, install at your own risk.

as always.........wait at least 2-3 weeks before you update your iphone...then you know how the firmware behaves after reading reviews, etc.

I had exactly the same problem trying to upgrade to 7.1.2. After I started the upgraded, it said connect to iTunes. I was unable to do anything else on the phone except connect. I was forced to do a Restore. When I connected to iTunes, it restored my phone back to a January 2014 version. It restored my apps as they were back then. I lost apps that I had downloaded since them, along with all their data. I have had to reenter multiple passwords. I thought iCloud was keeping everything current. Very annoying and time consuming.

How do you do a hard reboot when you have the known issue of the sleep/wake button not working?  I'm thinking I may have to just let the battery drain and then plug back in to to auto-restart.

May be time for a trip to an Apple Store Genius bar, if that is an option for you. Power button not working could be a hardware issue.

It's time to replace the phone. You didn't mention the model, but Apple is fixing broken SLEEP buttons on some models out of warranty. You really should take it to an Apple store as James said.

Has anyone else suddenly experienced terrible battery performance?  I'm still on 7.1.1 and 3 days ago my battery life jumped off a cliff.  No software changes, no background anything running, no pushes, full signal, nothing different or unusual from before.

Used to drop maybe 10% overnight.  Now goes from ~50% to dead overnight.  And random, odd cable connection issues.  It's the same as the sudden battery problems that a few are having after 7.1.2, but I'm still on 7.1.1.  Weird.

iPhones have been known to suddenly degrade battery performance for the past 7 years, independent of version, independent of any upgrade, after an upgrade, and just at random. And the subject has been discussed to death over those 7 years, including one thread with 13,000 posts and 3 million views that just kept repeating and repeating and repeating and repeating...the same symptoms, and the same advice. Obviously all but the first few didn't even bother to read the thread before posting.

The simple answer is that one of your apps is stuck sending or trying to send data and failing. You need to find the app and kill it. Or kill all apps, then reboot your phone. the other possibility is that your battery is failing. If you take it to an Apple store they can test that in a few seconds. I was having problems with my 5S (RE: above). It did finally just quit altogether last night and when I picked it up a couple hours later, the phone appeared to be off, but was very hot to the touch. Got into the Apple Store this afternoon, turned out the data was all correct, the hardware too EXCEPT it wouldn't hold a charge period. So the erratic behavior was probably caused by a faulty battery or dock connector. Sure, I could have had a glitch in my iOS, I did the update over WIFI instead of connecting to iTunes on my MacBookPro. Whatever, end of story, they swapped the iPhone out under warranty and now I just need to reload my apps and tunes and pix. Yay!!

Thanks Apple for your Buggy IOS 7.1.2 cause I updated this morning(Wed. July 8/2014) & right after this update was done my screen indicates that I will need to plug my iPhone 5S to iTunes!!

After trying to solve this issue all by myself for an hour & half & was unable to fix it.

Thank god I had recently bought my iPhone 5S this past Xmas from BestBuy by Coquitlam Centre & had bought the extra insurance of $13/M;  After the Geek Squad spend over 1/hour & 45min, they couldn't figure it out either;  So finally they exchanged it with a Brand New iPhone 5S.

I'm assuming if I didn't buy the extra insurance that I would be out of a iPhone 5S tonight & would had to pay out of my pocket for a brand new iPhone 5S & without a plan update only means that I had to pay the full price for one!!(*** APPLE!!)

I'm very disappointed in You(Apple) as this update was supposed to fix bugs & not the other way around.

Maybe Apple is trying to force all of us consumers to update our cell phones as they have found a new scam.

    NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER

Apple is not here. We are just users like you. The "connect to iTunes" screen usually indicates that a Restore is needed. Not an unusual kind of thing, so not sure what the issue was. However, if you want to let Apple know, do so here:

I had that problem with my 4s a few months back. Halfway thru the one of the updates, I think it was still iOS 6, the screen went blank and thereafter it's a static image of the charger and an arrow pointing to iTunes. A few hard resets later, I got it back to life but with ALL my apps gone. Had to install it from the App Store one by one which took hours. I also had to restore all my other data into my phone from iTunes. A month or so later, the phone died. Couldn't charge when turned on but could charge when turned off and couldn't connect to iTunes at all. Ended up buying a new 5s! Sad case...

2 days back and today while trying to update to iOS 7.1.2 for my iPad 4 and new 5S, it froze halfway thru the update process, same issue both times and for both devices. Luckily after doing a hard reset both times, I got my iPad and iPhone back to the way it was without connecting to iTunes. So, my advice to all, after reading all the comments here and having experienced it myself, DON'T UPDATE TO iOS 7.1.2! Apple please do something! Not all of us have extra insurance for our devices...

    Cheers!

    Dave G

p/s: here's a weird update: after doing a hard reset after my 5s froze at the update stage of 7.1.2 and unlocking my sim card, i went to settings to check for software update and it says iOS 7.1.2 Your software is up to date. how strange is that!

AAnother day at work. 8 more iPads and twelve more iPhones, both 4s and 5s and still not a single issue. Me thinks some folks are causing their own issues. BACK UP FIRST!!!!!!

I am having problems with iPhone microphone since updating to 7.1.2. For example: dictating two words "testing microphone" in Notes or in Mail took 20 seconds to show up & on two further tests didn't show up at all (little arrowed circle just kept going round and round) and then nothing. 2 seconds with 7.1.1

Almost instantaneous for me, once I tap Done.

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In many cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

Thanks James, had already reset. Tried reset again, and double click as you suggested. Microphone still not working dictating two words "testing microphone" in SMS or in Mail.
