Q: IOS 7.1.2 is buggy, don't update

After updating to 7.1.2 phone started to randomly restart for a couple of hours, then finally it shut off.  Now its stuck in the "Connect to Itunes" and wanting me to restore to factory then restore.  Great.  Thanks.  Luckily I have an iCloud backup this morning, but I'll have to reinstall all the apps.  For what I've seen so far, this update is buggy, install at your own risk.

Ever since I downloaded the OS 7.1.2 update, my iPhone 5 has been crashing several times a day and the battery is draining power excessively.  Because I do not have Apple Care, there is very little Apple will do for me outside of going to the Genius Bar.  The Apple reps said  (initially) that there was nothing wrong with my phone and that the download must have been corrupted due to WiFi issues.  So I did a reset.  I followed the advice of not using the iCloud or iTunes for the restore, because the Apple reps said that probably an AP is corrupted.  So I would need to re-download my APs from the store.  The restore worked temporarily, but then the crashes started up again.  And so I did another reset/restore, and the same thing happened.  And then I did another reset, but not a restore, and the crashes continued.  When the phone would not start, I took it the Genius Bar again to show Apple (at this point there was nothing on the phone). Again, the Rep insisted that there could not be a problem caused by the OS update and thought the phone was working fine.  He took it in the back to look at it, and then came back and said that the phone was damaged and there is nothing they can do about it.

My phone was in perfect working order before I did the OS 7.1.2 update.  I have to comment that when the Apple Reps saw that the problem pointed to Apple, they turned into good corporate foot soldiers and maintained the party line.  Given the number of problems that I am seeing on-line, I am hopeful that the FTC might take notice and start an investigation.

It seems your post was indeed warranted...had no problems updating iPad mini  & iPhone 4s but my 3rd gen iPad has to be restored, which means I will lose my photos! What a drag! Ugh!

Then just restore from your backup that you made prior to updating, as recommended by Apple:

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Here are some things to check before you get started:

You did make a backup first, right?

I'm even luckier than most apparently...not only did I get bricked, but iTunes doesn't even recognize my phone.  Yippee!  What a great way to spend a Sunday...in the "genius" bar waiting for the company who put out what seems to be a lousy update to wipe my phone clean and let me spend time starting over.  I had some sort of auto updates to the cloud, but I'm not even confident in that after reading everything...

I'm tired of the big companies like Google and Apple having customers by the short ones.  They don't pay taxes and we are their beta testers.  So sorry I ever updated this thing...but it was starting to affect usage (just like it did when I tried not to update to ios 7!) so I sort of had to.  Looking at phones NOT related to these 2 companies at this point...limits me a lot, but I'm over being beholden to companies that don't care about their customer base...

any ideas on being able to do this without the "geniuses?"  I can't even figure out the new iTunes (not a regular Apple user...I prefer other music software and I use a PC) to see where I'd try to FIND my phone...I assume it just comes up...which it doesn't.

Unless you purchased the Apple Care warranty, the genius bar will be a waste of time for you and will only make you more frustrated because they will end your session with a very cold shoulder (after starting it as your best friend). They will blame your data in the cloud, and you want to be very careful about future backups because you may wipe out valuable information (the cloud only has a few backup points).  Here are my thoughts:

    1.  Set up your phone as a new one, but turn off the automatic cloud backups for now. Don't use iTunes or the iCloud for this.

    2.  Set up your email accounts again on your phone, but again do not use the cloud or iTunes.  Go to the AP store and re-download key APs.

    3.  If you experience phone crashes, press both buttons for about 15 seconds until the apple logo shows up.  This will happen for several days, but it might get better over time.

    4.  When it does get better, reset your phone again as a new phone.  You can restore from iTunes or the cloud.  I was able to use iTunes.  Yesterday, I only crashed once, but my battery power performance has dropped significantly since the 7.1.2 update.

    5.  If the matter does not get better, contact a government agency, such as the FTC, to see if they will get involved.  Consumers' abilities to sue companies have been eroded in recent years by the courts and everyday we electronically sign contracts with companies like Apple where we agree to waive all sorts of legal rights.

I did change to the HTC One phone, which is a Google phone I believe.  Base price was $99 with a two year contract.  The technology is much better overall.  Most likely, I will be moving away from Apple products.  I still like my Nano iPod, but performance on my iPad is really not holding up well.  We've been sucked into the Apple line-up, but it just is not working and there is better, more reliable technology out there right now.

Unfortunately I have no choice but to waste my Sunday at the Apple store as I can't reboot my phone at all.  :-(

I think I'm going with the Blackberry Z30...worried because BB is shaky but it sounds like an amazing phone.

tired of both Google and Apple...

I also had to connect to iTunes and restore my phone after attempting to upgrade. I now know I should have backed up my data and apps prior to updating and will never upgrade again without backing up first!!! It did restore my phone but, because the last time I had backed it up to iTunes was January, it restored to how it was then. I lost apps, data and changes made since January. When I went to the App Store to download some of the lost apps, it remembered the ones I already paid for it and downloaded them for free. Also the data I had entered in the app was there. I'm happy about that. It was annoying, stupid and time consuming, but my phone is working again. Not doing a backup was my error. But I fault Apple for the misleading discription of the upgrade as "bug fixes" that lead me to think it was just a simple update.

I would just caution you that no update is "just a simple update". Any update to your software - especially the iOS, no matter how small, has the potential for failure. Have you considered using iCloud to back up your device daily? It will do it automatically once a day whenever the device is on the Lock Screen, it is plugged into a wall outlet, and it is on Wifi.

I get that the idea of having to do a physical backup any time you do an update is a major pain. So, that is why I have automatic iCloud backups set up, and I also back my device up to my computer at least once a month. I don't have to do a backup when I do updates, because I know I always have one that is current if I were to ever need it.

It always amazes me that people complain about losing data when there's a free service (two actually) that Apple provides, and one of them is a 'set it and forget it' option.

I've never gone more than two days without my device doing an automatic iCloud backup.

so...a quick trip to the Genius Bar and my phone is back to itself!  for some reason I DID set up the automatic backups to the Cloud (not sure when or why...I must've found out about and thought it was smart...it IS!!!)...Victor was able to get me up and running in 30 min or less.  Still peeved about the crappy update (and for all those claiming it isn't crappy?  When the Genius Bar has a laptop DEDICATED to 7.1.2 updates...it becomes rather clear that it IS a crappy update!!!)...but very happy with the service.

for all those out there...set up the automatic cloud updates...it's worth the few seconds it takes...saves a lot of time and heartbreak later.  And I'd still be hesitant about doing 7.1.2!  :-)

Thanks. I have been reluctant to back up on iCloud, but after this experience I think I will set it up for automatic iCloud backups. I thought backing up to iTunes was sufficient, but obviously I haven't been keeping it current. Thanks!

I totally agree. Why wouldn't someone take advantage of such an easy feature? Maybe fear of government spies?

Exactly why I did it that way. I am like most people - just not very good at being diligent about doing manual backups. This way, I don't even have to think about it, nor do I have to think about whether or not it is OK to do an update. Same reason I set up my Photo Stream to automatically upload and import to my Photo Library. Fewer things I have to remember, fewer tasks I have to do!
