I am running OSX 10.6.8, I installed Avast antivirus, after an Avast automatic update the drive won't boot up. I am getting endless spinning wheel on the screen. I verified disk permission, repaired disk, I tried Disk Warrior and Safe Mode ... nothing works.

In Library I found:

Library/Application Support/Avast/Components/uninstall/Uninstall Avast!

I could uninstall Avast in Single-User Mode, I need help to do it.

Thanks a lot!

Hi, I don't know how or if it's even possible to run an App in SU mode, but...

Look in these if they exist, some are invisible for avast components...

    /private/var/run/StartupItems

    /Library/StartupItems

    /System/Library/StartupItems

    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons

    /Library/LaunchDaemons

But since Safe mode doesn't work, perhaps some System file got tramped on.

I checked Private/var/run it does not have a StartupItems folder.

I looked into the other folders and found these Avast aliases files with broken links:

    com.avast.userinit.plist

    com.avast.init.plist

    com.avast.uninstall.plist

I tried to fix the broken Alias links, I am getting Error Code 8060.

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me, I will spend more time on it and I will keep you posted.

Do you know how rm in SU mode, or how to mv (rename) in SU mode?

If so I'd try that on those, but I still thing the OS must be messed up.

    Which alias links?

    Error -8060.

    It means either:

    - an alias points to a target file that isn't there any longer

    - there is a symbolic link with a typo in the name of the link (i.e. a link to "/XApplications" instead of "/Applications"

The pre-2006 Mac minitowers this forum covers cannot run OS 10.6.8. Perhaps you have a Mac Pro? Please confirm you model and OSX version for us. It can make a difference in the troubleshooting procedures.

I am booting up the computer from another drive, I can remove, move and rename any files on the problem drive without being in Single User Mode.

The aliases with broken link are below:

    com.avast.userinit.plist

    com.avast.init.plist

    com.avast.uninstall.plist

    Get Find Any File...

    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/

Hold Option or alt key when selecting Find to Find All.

Search All for Name Contains: com.avast
