Contacts iCloud account became untitled source and can't delete

Not quite the same problem, but I have just found three "untitled source" contacts accounts and it is IMPOSSIBLE to REMOVE them.

When you click the minus sign what happens? what error message do you get?

Absolutely nothing ! I can click as many times I want...

With the "real" accounts I have a pop-in saying "The Contacts account XXX is shared using iCloud. You can remove this account from iCloud in Internet Accounts." as all the other accounts come from the Internet accounts in System Preferences.

Reboot into Safe Mode and try again.

No change. Just tried and I can't remove these 3 empty accounts.

Try removing them from Internet Accounts in System Preferences.

That's the entire issue, these empty Contacts accounts do not show up under Internet Accounts in System Preferences...

If you select server setting in the screen shot does that give any information on where it might be coming from?

Yep, it tells me that it is a totally virgin (or wiped-out) record... see screen copies below, especially the exchange Server one :

I am exactly having the same problem and haven't found a solution to fix it yet. There is an untitled source in my contact accounts inactive by default. When I enable it, it's considered as CardDAV and I can't delete it in any ways!!!!

Same here. Exactly the same problem. And also unable to update Contact addresses in this Untitled Source. Can add new addresses but no edits to existing contacts in Untitled Source. Help!

I've got the same problem. But I can desactivate the 'untitled source'-account in the Contact's preferences. I cannot delete the account. It isn't very comforting to have a mysterious account popping up from nowhere and which still continues to vegetate on my HD.

I had a similar issue rlitho in that instead of saying iCloud in the heading on the left in the Contacts App it said untitled source and I couldn't change old contacts or click add to contacts from the mail app (it would just bring me to a new blank contact that I would have to fill out manually). I fixed it by deleting my iCloud account in System Preferences-->Internet Accounts. Then I deleted all my contacts in the contacts App so that when I set up my iCloud account again there would not be duplicates of my contacts. I hope this helps.

I had this same issue, on an Exchange account, the only way I could fix it was to delete everything in the ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Sources folder. I then went to preferences under the Contacts app and was able to properly re-associate the account.

As @ibrennan indicated, I had to rm ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Sources/*

I think I found the original cause of the problem on my system: prior to updating to Yosemite, I backed-up my address book to a Contacts Archive (.abbu file). After updating to Yosemite and setting up a clean iCloud account, I imported the Contacts Archive file (MyAddresses.abbu) into the Address Book. Apparently, the Contacts Archive contains information about the internet account in which the contacts originally resided--In my case, this was another iCloud account. This process resulted in the undeletable "Unknown Source" account in Contacts.

The solution I found was;

- go to another Mac that had my entire address book and use the "Export vCard" feature to export the entire address book to a .vcf file.

- Clean-up the new Mac's Contacts (rm ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Sources/*) and quit Contacts app.

- Go to System Preferences->iCloud and enable the "Contacts" checkbox

- Launch Contacts, select "All iCloud" in the left panel, and import the .vcf file

This resulted in correct account setup, but I did lose all my email groups (they apparently dont't come along in the a .vcf file format)
