10.9.4 Mac Mail Problem

After upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.4, mail will not to connect to the servers. I have multiple accounts both IMAP and POP through various email providers and all of them return the same errors. Running the connection doctor just shows all servers SMTP, POP, IMAP with a red dot and the error message "Could not connect to this (server type) server…" I have tried the following:

1. Check if other units are having this issue (no)

2. Check if account is live via webmail

3. Restart mail

4. Restart computer

5. Restart router

6. Look for other with similar problems

This morning when the mac was turned on, mail downloaded fine, then the upgrade notice popped up, was upgraded, restarted, etc. Now, mail will not send or receive and refuses to go online.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

After spending 5+ hours on chat and the phone with tech support, we are restoring from the last backup before the update. Hopefully, this will fix the problem.

Through the course of the diagnostics, I deleted envelope indexes from the mail folders forcing a rebuild, restarted in safe mode (email worked there), removed some startup files and restarted, removed cache files (somewhat unsuccessfully - they hung on until force restarting finder), added new accounts, etc. Then we restored from backup and now the thing will not even boot. Headed to the genius bar today.

I *think* the leaning at this point is that the upgrade install was somehow corrupt or the cache files were corrupt (either separate or from the install).

Thanks for the reply!

I've had the IMAP issue before and when it is intermittent, it has usually been because too many devices are checking all at once and messes up the mail server or the router here in our building. Typically, if a restart of Mail, a restart of the computer, and a restart of the router don't fix it, I call the company that hosts the server and they restart the IMAP server and it works again.

This has also happened when one of the devices checking has an incorrect password and the server thinks there is a hacking going on.

I had the same issue since updating to 10.9.4 yesterday afternoon. I have two pop accounts.

Mail will not connect and error message received saying

"cannot connect to the server on port 110". Forget doing any diagnostic tests, the problem is caused by the update because all other devices (iPhone, iPad etc) receive mail OK. First I tried rebooting router and then several "restarts." Finally solved the issue this morning by simply doing a proper computer "shutdown" and then rebooting. All is now back to normal!

For what it is worth, I downloaded Postbox 3 (the free trial version) and installed it after doing some research on what email programs play well with Mavericks.

Postbox 3 asked if I wanted to do a clean install or import settings from mail.

I did a clean install, then set up my primary pop email account using Postbox 3.

I am having no issues sending or receiving email using Postbox 3 and 10.9.4

Will continue to use free trial for 30 days before buying for $9.99 and will report back any issues.

Good luck everyone!

So, the saga continues. Today we clicked on the upgrade again by accident. Same thing. I packed it up and sent it to the genius bar. The email worked fine from there (except the one that forgot its password) sending and receiving.

It seems like for some reason, the 10.9.4 upgrade does not like our network ONLY for email with Mac mail. We are able to connect to the internet, just not the POP, IMAP, or SMTP servers. I am also able to connect to mail using Thunderbird.

Additionally, I installed 10.9.4 on another system with NO mail problems.

I continue to experience this problem intermittently. I have gone a day or two without any problems, then a day like today it's non-stop errors and little warning triangles. In my case I have traced (part of) the problem to congestion on my network. I use CrashPlan, Arq and Dropbox to backup and sync, and Mail stalls when my Mac is uploading a lot of files. Other apps are not noticeably affected by activity on the network, so it appears that the current version of Mail is particularly sensitive to network interference. If I pause my uploads, Mail starts working properly.

Alrighty, then . . . I stumbled on the solution this morning while on hold waiting for the escalation senior tech. The printer is causing some issue during the boot. When the tech got on the phone, I informed him to make "unplug peripherals" one of the first steps on their troubleshooting tree.

I don't know why I didn't think to try this earlier on. It really is a pretty basic trouble shooting method.
