Found the answer, re now need 10.7.x.
Hi,
It will be worth trying the following:-
1) Enable SSL in the Server settings of your AIM Login.
2) Change the server name to api.oscar.aol.com (which is the server used in iChat 6 and above)
Broadly speaking @me.com names that became linked to iCloud account at the MobileMe end/iCloud Start and are effectively iCloud names can be used as an AIM Screen Name as it does a double check with AIM and Apple to allow the password to be accessed.
Same for later issued @iCloud.com IDs
This does not happen for @mac.com names that are pre MobileMe in some cases.
This does mean the Login is less secure.
The upshot of this is @mac.com names worked in iChat 1 through Messages 8 without issue until the change.
@me.com and @icloud.com have never worked below iChat 6.
The Document seems to suggest that things will be moved closer together with no version of iChat (ver 5 or below) using an Apple issued ID.
Currently I am finding I can use an @mac.com ID in Mavericks.
Defcom (UK) who also posts in iChat reports in a later version of Lion it still works, although we both have had to switch to using SSL.
On a Snow Leopard Boot I have tried using the "newer" api server name which seems to cause the login to hang.
Results may vary depending on Time Zone and may not settle until everywhere has go to the 2nd July.
