What kind of screw is on the MacBook Pro mid-2012
Trying to replace the hard drive in my mid-2012 MBP. Can someone tell me what type of screw is holding the back cover of the MBP?
Thanks,
Jeff

If they are not Phillips (check them with a magnifier if you have one), then it's also possible that they could be Apple's proprietary Pentalobe screws:

WWell, these screws are not Phillips. They've gotta be a small torx screw. This is frustrating.
There are two different screws - 7 that are 'short' and 3 that are 'long.'
You can remove the screws with a Phillips Head #00 screwdriver.
If you want to remove your hard drive you'll also need a Torx T6 screwdriver.
If you lose screws, you can order a set from eBay for a nominal fee.

Nice little toolkit here -> http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/TOOLKIT14/.

The 2011 and 2012 models use the same Phillips #00 screwdriver - I bought the OWC toolkit long ago (before finely 'upgrading' to ifixit's toolkit!) and use that #00 for at least four drive changes.

According to them, they are Phillips #00. On my Late 2011 MBP, I have verified that they are #00 Phillips as well.

Why would I get these when others gets Phillips?
Is the MBP a *Retina* MBP? If not, I have no idea why they would use the Pentalobe screws on a regular MBP. Pentalobe screws are usually used for the MBP *Retina* and devices that Apple doesn't want you going inside of.
iFixit usually labels what type each screw is in it's guides. Keep them in a 'weekly pill box' or ice cube tray for organising so you don't get them mixed up 🙂
Thanks, Clinton. That is so weird. I have a set of Kobalt screw drivers including a PH00 that is not working. Wonder if they could have put in different screws?
Stupid question, but is a PH00 the same as a Phillips #00?
I added RAM to my 13-inch mid-2012 MBP and used a Philips 00
Yes indeed. These are pentalobe. Why would I get these when others gets Phillips?
Interestingly, iFixit states that all Retina MBP have the pentalobes. Wondering why I didn’t see this anywhere else?
Yes, it’s a Retina.

That's your answer. All MBP Retina models will have the Pentalobe screws.
