Hhhmmm!

Your post set me on a quest to see this for myself and so off to YouTube I bravely marched. Mission accomplished, but frankly, I'm at a loss to understand the benefit. Perhaps you could enlighten me.

The procedure shown in the YouTube video involves six steps and took one person 39 seconds and another person 55 seconds to achieve (excluding turning on the Hold key). It's especially fiddly when trying to scroll down to the Power option. It took 49 seconds on my iPod Classic and since there is no option for "Sleep Forever", I used the "Deep Sleep" option instead. It then takes one minute and 27 seconds for the iPod to re-boot when one decides that there is a desperate need to listen to some music.

My suggestion takes two seconds and involves only one step (or two, if one sensibly turns on the Hold key). Power up is immediate since it does not involve a re-boot (re-start) of the iPod.

What am I missing?

Hehe!

So presumably, you don't value the information I have supplied then. You certainly have a long winded way of seeking information that you didn't need anyway.

There is a standard procedure for Resetting an iPod Classic if it is not behaving properly.

Turn the Hold switch on then off again and press-and-hold the Menu and Select (centre) buttons together for at least ten seconds. This will cause the iPod to restart, during which time it will display the Apple logo for a short while. This is the same restart that occurs when you power back on after the "sleep forever".

Three steps and approximately one minute 35 seconds.

i Asked to shut down because I just wondered how to, even though I now know how to shut it down, I will never do it because as you said, it takes ages.

But the the only benefit I can see is that my iPod seems to be faster after the shut down. Maybe it clears all the useless files and things.

is your iPod faster or it's just mine
