Q: No in-call audio over Bluetooth with iPhone 5S

Goodmorning all,

I am having this strange issue with my iPhone 5S i just dont understand.

The issue is that when i pair my iPhone to any bluetooth device (headset or car stereo) and i place a call with bluetooth handsfree i do not get any audio from the iPhone to the device.

The strange thing is that it IS possible to stream music to my bluetooth devices which seems to be working just fine.

This started about 3 weeks ago, and eversince it`s not possible for me anymore to place calls over bluetooth which is verry annoying because i'm on the road allot.

The iPhone 5S (32GB) is on firmware version 7.1.2.

Thing i have tried to fix this issue, and non of these work:

  1. Reset network settings to default.
  2. restart the iphone a couple of times
  3. connect multiple bluetooth devices and cars.
  4. Reset phone to factory defaults (without conneciton to iTunes)
  5. Restore full iPhone with iTunes and without backup connected it to bluetooth devices.
  6. Disable 4G and call using 3G/GSM.

At this point i have no clue that to trie next.

I'm a technical guy but this beats me...

The weirdest part for me is the fact that i am able to stream music from my iPhone over bluetooth...

Is anyone experiencing this same issue and if yes, what did you trie to solve it?

Does anyone know a fix for this, in hardware or software ?

Thank you for the input!

It already helps if you just post if you ever experienced this or think with me on this.

Best regards, Maikel.

    SORTED OUT !!!

Had same problem for 5 months after battery replacement.

The key is to use 4 little screws holding square metal bracket over 3 screen connectors properly.

2 screws are VERY slightly shorter, and they MUST go to bottom part of bracket, closer to HOME button.

If you use longer one to bottom corner near battery, it will disable in-call audio, while music stream will be still working.

If you use longer one to bottom corner near phone frame, it will NOT start up and issue BSOD and keep restarting.

Tested, working brilliant now. I tested it while BT device connected on call with opened phone even without Home button connected

and just 1 turn screw counter clockwise run sound in call, tight back caused silent again. Hope it helped guys.

    Cheers Pete

    Hi Petr-x,

Thank for the reply, I can confirm that it's working. I re-opened my phone and moved the four screws to their correct positions, which indeed fixed the issue.

My mistake was that I didn't check the position of the screws on disassembly as I was relying on the guide I was following. I learnet my lesson.

    Well done Petr-x.

    Regards,

    Cornel.

    Petr-x,

You are a true genius.  A small turn on the screw closest to the battery got my incoming bluetooth audio working again!  Perhaps when people call in for support, after they ask if you have the latest version and did you do a restore/clear settings, they should ask if you have opened it up for any reason.  This is the only place I have seen this tip and I've been looking for a week.  Can't thank you enough!

    Deer Petr-x,

Thank you so much for your answer. It helped me sorting this out very quickly.

This thread's author should definitely mark this thread as solved!

The problem is the iFixit how-to are wrong and show wrong positions for these screws. That is probably why lots of people are experiencing this issue.

    Thank you again!

What!?!?!  Are you kidding me?  I have been searching for this for 2 months.  I can't wait to try this.  Amazing discovery.  Thanks Petr-x!

Petr-x you are genius. How did you ever find that?

I replaced the battery in my wife's iPhone 5S and had this problem which baffled me. I managed to get the fingerprint reader working again but couldn't figure out the Bluetooth call issue. I spent years working on helicopter avionics and never before have I encountered such a problem.

    A big thank you.

    Hi Big Al zz,

Although my BT is not working at in-call audio , my fingerprint reader is also not working. I saw in your post that you figgered out a solution to solve this issue. Can you tell me your solution?

My fingerprint reader just stopped working.

    With kind regards,

    Mark

This just happened to me.  I just had my touchscreen replaced at the Genius Bar, and the same day I noticed that I had lost my ability to listen to phone calls over the bluetooth headset.  I can switch to speaker or iPhone with no problems, and I can hear all other audio over the headset just fine.  Looks like another trip to the Genius Bar.

Wow that is the craziest tech fix / problem I think I've heard of (and I'm an engineer). I am having the same problem, and had recently brought to the genius bar for them to blow the dust out of the rear camera. I wonder of those screws would have been touched during that? If so is there a diagram showing which screws to check?
