OSX 10.9 is unstable - many IGMP_VERSION_3 panics

Question

My MBP panics very often with the same fault (full details below)|:panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff802bdee992): assertion failed: igi-&gt;igi_version &#x3D;&#x3D; IGMP_VERSION_3, file: /SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2422.110.17/bsd/netinet/igmp.c, line: 3720I have seen this mentioned on many threads and websites but even 10.9.4 just cored today.This happens when I have Thunderbolt Ethernet attached, when I&#x27;m using Airport and when I&#x27;m using VPN, all at random times - sometimes it can happen three times in a row if I&#x27;m trying to use VPN over Airport and sometimes it is rock solid weeks at a time.This is clearly a fault in the network code in the FreeBSD core of OSX and I would like to know if there is a resolution.I have many Macs but this MBPr is the only one that seems to be suffering these panics. There are other reports of this issue. It seems to be caused either by a bug in OS X or by a faulty USB- or Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adapter (including a Thunderbolt Display.)

Have to agree entirely with the original poster here.  This is a serious blot on the Mac stability copybook.  I&#x27;ve never had such a ridiculously unstable Mac and 100% of the crashes are exactly the same report as posted here.Seriously Apple, I&#x27;ve had like 30 hard kernel crashes over the last 6 months every single one down to this bug.  Please escalate it to the core OS X devs to check out before I go completely round the bend.  I have 3 other colleagues who all have the exact same experience too and the reputation of new Macs is going down the drain here.

Thanks Eric,Yes I&#x27;ve been feeding back for 6 months sending every crash report with detailed information and comments and explaining the frequency of these problems, but alas nothing.  I&#x27;m one of 4 researchers at our University with new Macs who have this issue and we&#x27;re getting the distinct impression that we&#x27;re supposed to just get used to living without the Thunderbolt Ethernet because there&#x27;s no sign of any movement in several point releases of Mavericks.  They&#x27;re going to lose these users if they&#x27;re not careful and these are people who buy lots of machines on research grants and, for research purposes, want the high speed networking.

Hi all!I think we have identified the problem at my shop: we just recently switched to IGMP v3 when we moved to new routers. All of a sudden we saw crashes occur consistently when we moved VLANs to the new hardware. Far from all the computers with Ethernet adapters crashed, but with the ones that did, we&#x27;ve changed a few of the affected VLANs back to IGMP 2. That seems to have stopped the crashes. We&#x27;ve only seen it with 10.9.x, but that is by far our prevalent OS here. I&#x27;m not sure to which extent this affects other OS versions, since it&#x27;s only about 5% of the machines with ethernet adapter that&#x27;s been crashing. However, worth checking with your network guys if they are running IGMP v 3.As a comparison, our shop has about 800 Macs that we can monitor through JSS, and about 10 of them has had this problem. We&#x27;re running approximately 1.5 B class networks.
