Hello there rwsjhess,
It sounds like you are unable to connect to the internet after your iPhone 5s is connected to your Airport Extreme Wi-Fi network and you have forgotten the network, as well as reset the network settings. I would use the other steps that have not been done from the following article to help resolve the issue:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
- Restart your iOS device.
- Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
- Update your device to the latest version of software.
- Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
And also this section from toward the bottom of the article if needed:
Unable to access the Internet while connected to Wi-Fi
- If you're using a public or commercial network, you may need to log in or subscribe.
- Check to see if you have a self-assigned IP address:
- Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected and tap .
- If your IP address is 169.254.xxx.xxx, you may not be able to access the Internet.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
All the best,
Sterling

Thank you Sterling. I upgraded the iOS in the latest and it clicked. Airport firmware was already good. Restarts did not help. But I am better now. Thanks for being a part of this helpful community.
My pleasure, I'm glad to have helped!
