iMac Late 2012 Continually Losing Power

Hi, my iMac 27" (Late 2012 model) has for the past few days been losing power at random intervals. It has happened twice today, and once daily for the past two days. It will completely lose all power, returning to its off state without me/itself shutting it down properly. Also the only way to get it back on is for me to unplug the cord from the wall and reinsert it into a different power socket. I know its not the outlet that is the problem, as I have a number of other things connected to it that work without any trouble. It is also into the wall outlet not an extension cord/adapter etc. The power button on the iMac won't turn it back on after this happens, so the only way for me to start it up again is if I unplug the actual power cord. I haven't done anything differently as I normally would (had this computer for 1.5 years now) and I haven't used any intensive applications that drain memory and extra power - in fact for the past few days all I have been really using are just the calendars app, iTunes and reminders as I normally would. One other thing, I have just changed the power cable to another one, but will wait and see how this one works, in case it is just the power cable that isn't working properly. I doubt this is the case however, as I've had no problems with the original cable before and it looks to be in perfect condition. Any help is appreciated on how I could prevent this from happening, (assuming that the new power cable doesn't fix the issue), and thanks in advance. 😀

Oh and one other thing, for some reason this latest restart appears to have completely reset my launchpad sorting back to its original alphabetical state. Any ideas on why this could occur? Its also not the first time a restart/power off has reset something, as about a week ago when I shut it down properly at night, the following morning I found that my notifications sorting in System Preferences had been reset to default, and all 3rd party notifications from Safari websites had been turned off.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have done all your above steps and still no luck. I am able to get the computer back on after doing this, however it will continue to power off at random intervals. Is it possible this could be a software issue? I previously installed some of my own memory (RAM) into the machine, not through Apple. However, this was months ago, and since that time, I had a previous (unrelated) issue with my iMac (where it was crashing, not like an abrupt power off like this instance), and ended up taking it into the Apple Store. Here, they did not encounter any of those issues that I had (the crashing and kernel panics), but removed the additional memory for testing and did not put it back in - resulting in its original 8GB of RAM. I found that out after already setting up my iMac, and now I am yet to reinstall my additional memory again after getting it back from Apple.

The point is, could this limited memory be the cause of it? Recently, my RAM monitoring application has been indicating very low levels of free memory, (less than 1GB free, to as low as a few MBs) resulting in an emergency auto-clean of the RAM. This is with the original 8GB of RAM. However, this only started a week ago, and in the last few months (with only the 8GBs) I have been fine with memory use, and haven't changed what programs I use daily. So could this memory be the cause of all this?

On a side note, this is the Late 2012 iMac 27", and I purchased it the day it became available (back in around November 12). However it was met with a lot of production issues and so I didn't end up receiving it until January, despite it obviously being one of the first machines of this model. I'd think this computer would have been in the first number of purchases for this particular order (completely maxed out besides RAM), as I got it directly from the Apple site the day it was available to buy, roughly a week prior to when it first became available in stores. (And then they subsequently ran out of supply and had to wait for more to come in stock). Anyway, having used this computer for well over a year now on a daily basis, I have encounter a number of problems with it. I have taken it to the Apple Store after it was crashing constantly (around January this year), but they were unable to replicate the cause of the crashes, and so I picked it up without having had anything (besides RAM removal) done to it. Call it a gut instinct or whatever, but I can just tell that there is something wrong with the machine, and that it is likely to be a hardware side. I am wondering if it could be the fact that because this was one of the first orders with this model, something could have happened during production of this particular iMac (and any other early versions of this particular model). The problem is, the Apple Store cannot replicate these issues, as it seems to occur at random, during general use, but I am experiencing something like this (and not just an application crash or anything) at least once or twice fortnightly. Could this be a real issue, or am I just a little paranoid? Thanks!

Macs are extremely sensitive to RAM, uninstall the RAM you put in and re--test with original RAM that shipped with the computer. If the machine begins working OK then you have pinpointed your problem. Then replace the purchased RAM with high quality RAM from either Crucial or OWC (www.macsales.com), you may pay a bit more but your problem is fixed.

If RAM is not the issue then please run an EtreCheck report and post the results here. Then we can look for any obvious software issues.

Jul 8, 2014 11:59 PM in response to rkaufmann87

Hi rkaufmann87, thanks for your reply. I don't think I worded my above comment very well/was clear enough before, but what I meant was that the RAM currently in the iMac (and has been for some time) is the original 8GBs that came with it. I did have the extra amount previously inserted, but that was about 6 months ago, and whilst I experienced another problem during that time, it is entirely different to the one I'm facing currently. So sorry about the mix up, and I hope that clears it up a bit better.

Anyway, I have run the EtreCheck, and here are the results. I'm not sure if I was supposed to blur/erase anything but here it is unedited:

I see one major issue and possibly another, first is you use third party maintenance utilities on your iMac. The one I am referring to is Cleanmymac, this is crap ware that will bog down a systems operation. If you use any party utilities to maintain your system not only are the 100% unnecessary they can (and most of do) harm performance and system operation. Follow the developers instructions for uninstalling the apps 100%.

Jul 9, 2014 4:41 PM in response to Lifeless Potato

Find the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder and looks like this

User uploaded file

You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.

Open Console.

If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu.

Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.

To do that type the words shutdown cause in the Filter field at the upper right of the Console window. That will cause all log entries to be hidden, except for the entries containing those words.

Copy and paste those entries in a reply.

Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered.

The following recommendation regarding the CleanMyMac garbage is also applicable. It may not be the sole cause of the random shutdowns you describe but given the extent to which that Mac has been modified, it should be considered:

If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.

Using CleanMyMac to remove what it considers "junk" will corrupt a system.

Nothing less than erasing your Mac and rebuilding it from the ground up will undo the effects of having used it, and its developer's instructions for uninstalling it are not completely effective. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving those components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.

I know of no way to recover from the effects of having used CleanMyMac than to completely erase the volume on which it was used, reinstall OS X and essential software from their original sources, and restore your essential work files and other documents from a backup that has not been corrupted by CleanMyMac or anything else.

I know no other way to recover from having used it other than these recommendations.

May I suggest that you review the following setting in System Preferences?

User uploaded file

Although you may easily override that setting, it will serve to protect you from inadvertently installing garbage.A downloaded disk image or installer package file itself can do nothing until it is opened and installed, and the above setting (known as Gatekeeper) will prevent that from occurring.

Jul 10, 2014 12:09 AM in response to John Galt

Hi guys, firstly thanks for your reply. In regards to that CleanMyMac rubbish, I completely agree with you that this program (and ones like it) are total crap. I installed this app an extremely long time ago (at least 4 years) on a previous Mac, most likely when the application first became available? Anyway, I had never used the program (apart from the first initial run) and certainly not for the last few years. Furthermore, I would have deleted it not long after I installed it, or maybe even on the same day if my memory serves me well. Again, this was years and years ago, but I was relatively new to OS X at the time and would probably have just deleted it by dragging the app to the trash, not the proper way of uninstalling apps, thereby leaving behind these files, which remain after all this time. I have now properly removed the app, according to the developer's instructions, and after running the EtreCheck again, no such reference to this app appear.

However, despite this, my iMac continues to randomly power off, and on this most recent occasion (about 30 mins after running the second check), it failed to power up after resetting the SMC, which is what I have been doing to get the computer to start back up again previously. Pulling the cord out for 15 seconds would previously work immediately after putting it back in, with this most recent occurrence the exception. This happened roughly 2 hours ago, and I had been unable to get it to turn back on until just now. I had left the cord plugged in at the wall and powered on for the last 2 hours (still not starting up), but then I repeated the SMC test again, and it was able to power back up again.

In addition, I followed John's steps in console this morning, but it did not produce any results at all. The time stamps ranged from 12am to around 12pm on July 10, with hundreds of entries, none relating to the shutdown cause. I had left my computer on overnight to see if it would power off, and it did not, but when I accidentally clicked on iPhoto just after lunchtime today, it immediately powered off. Also, I hadn't opened iPhoto in the past few days, so it doesn't seem like that app alone is responsible for these problems. However one thing I do notice is that when put under greater strain than what the iMac had been under in the last few minutes (say by opening a large/heavy program such as iPhoto or Photoshop, along with other apps that I always have open, iTunes, Calendar etc.) this would seem to be when it would power off most often - but this wasn't always the case, as it would still happen at random intervals. Still, it has never happened when I wasn't using the computer (such as when I left it on overnight).

So, no luck on either of these approaches, but I am wondering if I were to restore my Mac, start over as new, and then drag and drop files and content from my backup drive (as opposed to restoring from a backup, where the problem, assuming it is software related, could be transferred over again), that this could fix my problem? Earlier in the year, when I had these other problems with this iMac, I had to erase the HD, and I intended to restore from my backup drive, however it turned out that it had been corrupted by whatever that previous problem was. So I set it up as new, used a HD repairer to try fix the drive, and copied back whatever I could salvage, in the same way I would be doing here (without the need to repair the backup drive this time, of course). Is this worth a shot, or am I probably just going to be wasting my time as it is more than likely to be a hardware problem? Cheers!

Also thank you so much for your help thus far, regards.

Jul 10, 2014 8:56 AM in response to Lifeless Potato

Randomly shutting down, if in fact that's what it is really doing and not just entering system sleep, strongly suggests a hardware fault but it would be preferable to confirm that suspicion with the system logs.

If you find no shutdown cause recorded in system.log scroll down the column on the left and examine the archived system log files. They start with system.log.0.gz and are numbered sequentially from there. It is possible an unexpected shutdown due to a hardware fault might not be logged.

While you're there examine the system.log file for other likely causes that preceded to the unexpected shutdown.

To do that type the words bootlog in the Filter field at the upper right of the Console window:

User uploaded file

That will cause all log entries to be hidden, except for the entries containing those words. The last entry in the list will correspond to the last time you started the Mac. It will have a time stamp in the form hh:mm:ss later than the time you noted in the Mac's menu bar prior to shutdown.

Make note of that exact time in hours, minutes, and seconds.

Next: Clear the filter field by clicking the x in the above screenshot. It should then look like this:

User uploaded file

All previously displayed log entries will reappear.

Next: Find the log entry that corresponds exactly to the time you noted in hours, minutes, and seconds containing the words "BOOT_TIME". You may have to scroll up or down a considerable distance. When you find that line, select it and drag your cursor up and prior to the entry corresponding to the approximate time you noted before shutting down the Mac. This will result in a selection of perhaps 100 to 200 lines or so.

One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the unexpected shutdowns.

Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. Remember to delete or obscure any personal information before posting it.

Hi John and Lifeless Potato,

I too have the same problems of random shutdowns. I have had it in at the Genius Bar. They tested it for a week, put it on the brink and couldn't make it randomly shutdown. I have tried the lot, removed peripherals, changed power cords and even installed new power points. Alas the problem recurs.

My console gave me the following results in the past two hours:

Hi all,

Anybody solved this issue? I had same model, same symptom for a while, recently happening more frequently.

I brought my Mac to Apple Store, tested for about a week, got power supply replaced. It looked good for about 2 weeks but I am experiencing same symptom again. Once the machine lost the power, I cannot turn it on. I have to unplug, wait 10+ seconds (press power button some time) then plugin and power on. So it became clear, it is not power supply issue.

I am not sure if software can cause this kind of issue. It is really sudden black out, not normal shutdown process. Symptom was there both on Mavericks and Yosemite(current OS). Not sure if I should just try clean install of OS?

May 10, 2016 3:05 AM in response to cre8ivepark

Nothing seems to work for me, and I've heard conflicting reports about replacing logic board, graphics card, or power supply.. Afraid I'm just barely out of warranty, and I don't want to dump unnecessary $$ on this hunk of junk. I wonder if Apple diagnoses the problem, suggests a repair, you pay for that repair and it doesn't solve the problem, will they refund you or continue helping to repair? Or is it just money going further and further into the toilet??
