How can I enter a date in Numbers with a bluetooth keyboard on iPad?

i got a great bluetooth keyboard to help me write in numbers and pages. However when I want to record a date like july 1st or 7/1 it won't let me no matter which tab I use text or numbers, and especially not date. It only will let me tap on the date. Is there any way to disable touch to make it more like the mac version?

I saw someone say to start with a number then hit enter and use arrows to go back but that is horrible for doing over and over on many cells.
