Why isn't imessage working on my iPod touch 5th gen

Whenever I open messages on my iPod touch 5 it just gives me a white screen with the time and battery icon still at the top. When I double touch the home button to clear my open apps, the message app still has a picture of my last conversation. It started not working yesterday when I had iOS 7, but then I downloaded iOS 7.1.2 and it still hasn't been working? I have tried turning it off and back on again 3 times and turned off imessage twice and nothing has helped. What should I do?

iOS: Troubleshooting Messages

And as necessary:

- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

- Reset all settings

Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

- Restore from backup. See:

iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
