Dashed outline in Excel workbook gallery

I have a file saved on my mac which seems to have disappeared. The only place I can find it is in "open recent" where it (and some others) appear as a dashed line box. When I double click I am told that the file could not be found and to make sure it hasn't been moved or deleted. I definitely did not delete it. I have used finder and spotlight with no success. Help please!
