I have just replaced the old, aging 3.5 inch HDD in a late 2006–early 2007 24 inch iMac, which gave it a speed bump. There is much room there to put a second 2.5 disk, a standard rotational disk, can this be done? And how? How should I connect the 2nd disk? of course, without affecting the new SSD inside.
Sorry, I was not clear: I put a Samsung 128 GB SSD inside with an adapter the size of the initial 3.5 inch HDD. There is still much room there to put a second 2.5 inch HDD. I do hope it is all clear now.
2.5" HDDs are slower unless you get something like a 7200 rpm HGST or another SSD.
The best way to add or use a second HD with that iMac. Is to add a 3.5" HDD (or SSD) in the optical bay using an OWC macsales.com data doubler kit or just use a good quality External FireWire HD.
den.thed, yes, instead the optical bay, that is what I have in my MacBook... that iMac is of my son, and he still needs that optical drive.
Then a good External FireWire Drive might be the best way to go for storing things like his iTunes and iPhoto Libraries that won't fix in the SSD.
