Search Google from the URL bar in safari not working, Help...

Hi to everyone,

im stuck here trying to find out why i can't search more in the url bar in safari. Just happened few weeks ago and i most use bing or yahoo.

I did try to delete cache and plist etc, everything i read in the net but still not working. I have mac pro 2011, and I'm not sure but i think this happened after i open a second account for my girlfriend in my mac, so she can have her own account. I check and in the other account happen the same...some ideas?

My problem in all safari browsers on all my devices (mac mini, imac, macbook air) dont search anything at all if i type and hit enter in the url bar

(Unless i hit enter another one or two times after unselecting the text

as seen below, the search term is highlighted text/ this highlighting' or better said 'selected text', just starys there when i hit ENTER. to make it search google i have to then hit it again

It never used to be like that, but is now. Nothing to do with settings as it is same on all my devices. All devices use El Capitan, because i wont upgrade to Sierra as it is only for social networkers and content consumption but not for productivity. I dont like how the osx is developing from something for professionals, to become a media consumption device. So i stick with El Capitan (would downgrade to Mavericks if i could, that was the best)

Anyway, Safari search in url bar is a pain in the butt these days

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is marked solved, less people are likely to look at it. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Just discovered this thread - I'm having the same problem and none of the solutions suggested work for me.

My problem is that I am unable to type in the Safari URL window - either to edit a URL or to search. In the interim I'm using firefox.

running 10.10.5 on a macbook pro.

I have booted in safe mode - problem persists.

I have deleted .db files - doesn't help.

The problem only appears on my normal account.

I also have an "admin" account that I pretty much never use and Safari works OK on that.

I recently updated Java and (as usual) rejected yahoo, not sure if that's relevant.

on both accounts I have two DNS numbers in preferences/advanced/DNS but they are the same on both accounts: 212.27.40.240 and 212.27.40.241

furthermore they are the same on my other laptop - an old macbook running lion with no Safari issues.

that's all the information I can think of. please help !

Same here, as of today. Two users so far, one is me. Safari 9.0.3 and Mac OS X 10.10.5.

Typing in the address bar in Safari doesn't work. Clicking a favorite does work but the url can't be edited. Reload button works but/and url text is put in double, overlapping text in the address bar.

Firefox and Chrome work fine. And yes!: above fix mentioned by LeGrosTiti works :-)
