ibooks app won't install

It sounds like you are wanting to install the iBooks app, but when you try it does not install. I would start by quitting all the running apps on your iPod Touch with:

iOS: Force an app to close

Double-click the Home button.

Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.

Swipe the app up to close it.

When you have done that and restart the phone and test the issue again:

iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting

I have a 4th gen IPOD (IOS 6.1.6 and itunes 11.2.2.3) and have done both the restart and the reset followed by an attempt to install ibooks. Both have failed. I have even tried installing other new apps with it and only the other app installs while ibook reverts back to the "install" button. Is there any way that I can download an older version of ibook?

I originally deleted ibooks because it would not start. I thought a re-install would work. Now I have a pile of ibooks that I cannot open.

You should be able to download a compatible version. Do a reset i.e. hold the power and home buttons until the Apple logo appears. If the install won't complete, go to the Purchased section in the App Store and tap to download. You should be prompted to download a compatible version.
