Q: App Store won't download updates, gets stuck "calculating"
Running App Store version 1.3, on a 13" Macbook Pro running OS X 10.9.4. Ever since downloading Mavericks, my Macbook has been acting funny. My biggest concern is how it has affected the App Store. The App store will not download any updates for any programs (iMovie, Final Cut Pro X, Garageband, etc). For the longest time, the updates were't even listing in the Updates section, but were accessible under Purchases. When it tries to update, it gets stuck "calculating", and won't download any of the update.
I downloaded the latest system update directly from the apple website, and I've removed Final Cut Pro X and attempted to redownload it, but it will not download it.
It's like the updating is frozen. I have tried multiple reboots. I have checked for unfinished downloads. I rebooted my Macbook in Safe Mode, and now the iMovie update appears available (unlike before), but I get the same issue. When it tries to download, the App Store won't actually download any information (0kb of267mb) and gets stuck calculating. I have checked my hard drive, and I have 150gb available, so I don't suspect it is a space issue.
iTunes has also become unresponsive. When I load it, the icon bounces a hill in my dock, and then I get an error message saying iTunes has quit unexpectantly. I get this each and every time I attempt to access the program. This is only related by the fact that it started happening after downloading Mavericks.
At this point, I'm open to suggestions. I really need to be able to edit video and access iTunes, so I'd like to get my computer back up and running.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance. You can skip this step if you don't care about the data that hasn't been backed up.
Reinstall the OS.* Your data should be unaffected unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.
