My 3rd generation iPad no longer has ANY sound and I have done all of the suggested trouble shooting.
Do I need to just replace the speakers? Thank you.

Do I need to just replace the speakers? Thank you.
We have no way of knowing what you have tried that didn't work, so try a reset.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
No data is lost due to a reset.
You really need to explain what you have already tried. As Carolyn said, we have no clue what. "All the troubleshooting steps" includes. Carolyn gave you a couple of ideas and here is my standard "sound issues" boilerplate.
1. If you have no sound at all, even in the Music App, try rebooting the iPad.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
2. If you lost sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
If you are running iOS 5 or iOS 6, the system sound control is in the task bar at the bottom. Double tap the home button and swipe all the way to the right in the task bar to get to the speaker icon on the left side. Tap on that and the sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

3. Try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings. No data will be lost but you will have to enter all of the device settings again.
4. If you still have no sound, try cleaning the dock connector opening of the iPad with a soft brush and just a little bit of rubbing alcohol.
Do you get sound using earphones?
Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

To solve some sound problems, just follow these simple steps
1. Go to Settings
2. Tap on General
3. Tap on Reset
4. Tap on Reset All Settings
What this effectively does is to reset some of your Settings to factory default. It’s not a complete removal of settings. It removes all of your preferences for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do No Disturb, Notifications, General, Sounds, Brightness & Wallpaper and Privacy. It doesn’t affect your data. All of your email accounts will remain intact, as well as any SMS text or iMessages.
Cheers, Tom 😉
Sorry everyone. I have checked my sound, checked the lock and mute setting, reset it, just updated it to iOS 7.1.2 today and none of that worked. If I put my headphones or portable speaker in then my sound works, but as soon as either one is removed ALL sound is gone. There are no alerts, no video sound, no music, etc., unless my headphones or speaker is plugged in. Now, I had turned the ringer off for a little while (a few days or a week) and turned it back on and I was able to hear alert notifications and the lock screen sound when I closed the smart case. Until, I tried to play music and this scratchy noise came out and ALL sound was gone once again. That happened twice where I could get some sound, but it was only for a mere moment and then all was lost once more.
it's not software it's not a setting it's a hardware issue one which all tablets and smartphone can get

iPhone stuck in "headphones" mode
and more hits here
it's been around as a risk since the first smartphones had speakers which should mute when headsets were connected
and the detector can both get stuck on headphones mode and the opposite where headsets are not detected
My iPad is not stuck in headphone mode. The ONLY way I can get any sound/hear (alerts, music, sounds to games, etc.) is if my headphones or portable speaker is plugged in.

Yes, your iPad is stuck in headphones mode. That means you only get sound when the headphones are plugged in. That IS headphones mode. You should read the discussion that Rudegar posted for you in his reply above.
You you could have debris stuck in the earphone jack or you might have a loose connection in there. You can try cleaning the Jack, blowing into it to try to loosen anything that might be in there. You can try inserting the headphones and removing them quickly several times in succession.
I have experienced that before and it shows you're turning up the headset volume when you are pressing the volume and there is no sound. That is how I know its not stuck in headphone mode. When I'm hitting the volume button for music or for videos it shows the "volume" indicator. Ive also cleaned and blew in the docking jack to clear anything that may be in there and still nothing.
Well if you have tried all of the suggested troubleshooting steps, and it sure seems like you have .... It's time to make an appointment at an Apple Store and ask for their help. If it's hardware, there is nothing that you can do about it other than to have it repaired or replaced - at a price of course - unless your iPad is still under an AppleCare+ Warranty.

Tex, I have done all of that. I even did a factor reset and still nothing. As Demo has stated it sounds like Im one of the unfortunate ones that all the tricks to get it back working did not work and for me its a hardware issue.
I have a similar problem. I did the update to 7.1.2 and lost MOST of my sound. Alarm and Siri still work on the speakers. Notifications don't work though. And I get all of the sound back with earphones.
This is starting to really upset me.
Found this post to have ALL the issues I have....and it did all the fix suggestions as well...with no fix to the problem. Has anyone come across any more info or a possible solution?
thanks.
