Q: Didn't Get Response from Software Update Server (mhq-swupdate.local)?

My MacBook is less than a month old. Data transfer occurred via time machine external hard drive because I lost my old laptop.

When I try to try software update on my new machine both at (1) my own initiative and (2) after opening iTunes and receiving message that a new version is available, I get the following message:

Didn't Get Response from Software Update Server (mhq-swupdate.local).

I've tried Googling both the message and the "mhq-swupdate.local" and gotten nothing. Sorry if this is issue has already been addressed, but I can't find a response that helps me. I did try deleting "com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist" and then emptied trash and then restarted.

Your system is configured to download updates from a private server, not from Apple. That server isn't working or isn't reachable. If you're bound to a network directory server, or if you're behind a firewall that doesn't allow downloading updates directly from Apple, your network administrator has to solve the problem. Otherwise, proceed as follows.

    Back up all data.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

    In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder…

from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.

A Finder window will open with a file selected. Delete the selected file. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Restart the computer and try Software Update again.

I think there may be a slight issue with Linc's solution.

Triple-clicking the line and copying it copies the return at the end of line. So, you may have entered more text than you thought into the Go To Folder window.

    Try:

    1. Open Go To Folder again (CMD+Shift+G while in the Finder) then,
    2. Make sure to select everything in the input field with CMD+A, and delete any text
    3. Type in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.soft then hit TAB to complete
