unable to install updates via App Store or Installer.app

Ever since updating my 2008 Mac Pro from Mountain Lion (+Server.app) to Mavericks (10.9.3+Server.app) about a month ago, I have been unable to install updates on that system in any way, shape, or form. Fixing permissions did not fix the problem, and reinstalling Mavericks also did not fix the problem.

When trying to check for updates in the App Store, I run into this error:

User uploaded file

I have researched this problem extensively, and found no solution or workaround. I also could find little in the way of relevant log entries for the problem.

So, now I'm trying to install 10.9.4 manually, from a downloaded .dmg. As you can see from the screenshot below, I started the installation of 10.9.4 over five and a half hours ago. One message happened almost an hour after kicking off installation, but still nothing has happened. The logs are included inline here for your convenience.

Has anybody seen this before? Help much appreciated!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Thanks, Mr. Davis.

Same result, both booting with safe mode and after the first reboot after. The only difference: one of the scans was somehow able to notice the 10.9.4 update from the App Store, but the scan still took forever and ended with the "can't load data" error. It was also still unable to install the update manually. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you'd like for me to post logs or screenshots, but they'd be redundant, as far as I can tell.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Select

/var/log install.log

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen. The contents of the log will appear on the right. Each log message begins with a timestamp. Select the messages from the time of the last installation or update attempt. If you're not sure when that was, click the Clear Display button in the toolbar of the Console window and then try the installation again. Select the new messages that appear. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

☞ If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

☞ Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. You may need to use a text editor with search and replace, such as TextEdit.

This procedure is complicated, but you probably won't have to do all of it.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until the issue is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.

Step 1

Check the status of the service. If it's down, wait tor it to come back up. There may be a localized outage, even if the status indicator is green.

Step 2

Check that the date (including the year) and time shown by your system clock are correct.

Step 3

Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate.

Step 4

If you connect to the Internet through an HTTPS or SOCKS proxy server, follow the instructions in this support article, or deselect the proxy entirely.

Step 5

Start up in safe mode and test.

Step 6

Make sure Parental Controls aren't active for your account.

Step 7

Follow the instructions in this support article to change your DNS settings. If there's no change, revert the settings.

Step 8

If possible, test on a different network, such as a public Wi-Fi hotspot or the cellular network of your phone.

Step 9

Launch the Keychain Access application. In the Keychains list, there should be items named System and System Roots. If not, select

File Add Keychain

from the menu bar and add the following items:

/Library/Keychains/System.keychain
/System/Library/Keychains/SystemRootCertificates.keychain

From the Category list in the lower left corner of the window, select Certificates. Look carefully at the list of certificates in the right side of the window. If any of them has a a blue-and-white plus sign or a red "X" in the icon, double-click it. An inspection window will open. Click the disclosure triangle labeled Trust to disclose the trust settings for the certificate. From the menu at the top, select

When using this certificate: Use System Defaults

Close the inspection window. You'll be prompted for your administrator password to update the settings. Revert all the certificates with non-default trust settings. Never again change any of those settings.

From the menu bar, select

Keychain Access Preferences... Certificates

There are three menus in the window. Change the selection in the top two to Best attempt, and in the bottom one to CRL.

Next, select the login keychain. Delete any expired or otherwise invalid certificates.

Log out, log back in, and test.

Step 10

Launch the Activity Monitor application. Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar of the Activity Monitor window, if not already selected. Enter "ocspd" (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Is a process with that name listed?

If not, back up all data, then triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

/var/db/crls

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Move all the files in the folder that opens to the Trash. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. Restart the computer, empty the Trash, and test.

Step 11

If you've moved to a different country, select

Store View My Account

from the App Store menu bar, then click

Change Country or Region

and update your billing information.

1. The software updates service isn't down.

2. The system is on time.

3. Done this many times; hasn't solved the problem.

4. Not using a proxy of any kind.

5. Safe mode: this was the subject of a prior test; no significant results.

6. Parental controls probably *should* be enabled for me, but they're not.

7. DNS resolution is not a problem. This host is its own DNS server, and the server for the LAN. There are other working software

8. Not really possible. It's a Mac Pro, 2008. Again, though, no issues with network. Plenty of working iOS and Mac OS X clients here.

9. There are some self-generated certs here with custom trust settings that won't reset ... but none of them should make the App Store weird. OSCP and CRL already at "best attempt." Priority changed to CRL. Deleted a few expired certs.

10. sudo mv /var/db/crls/* ~/.Trash && sudo reboot

11. Not applicable. Still in the USA.

Doesn't look like it worked. Still "can't load data."

Jan 29, 2015 8:17 PM in response to Peter Bartoli

This problem followed me through the update from Mavericks to Yosemite, and I finally figured it out, in case anybody else runs into it again.

The software update process was running getPPDVersion to check the versions of all printer descriptions, and I had something corrupt in /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources or something that getPPDVersion didn't like, and the App Store would time out waiting for getPPDVersion to finish.

To fix the problem, I replaced the contents of /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources with a known good copy from a fresh installation, and bam, was able to scan for updates.

unable to install updates via App Store or Installer.app
