What do i do about OS X Utilities Pane?

The top translucent bar on my computer was disappearing, and nothing was functioning properly, I couldn't restart my computer by hitting the restart button, so I had to click and hold the power button. I didn't drop my computer or anything, but when it restarted, the screen displayed the osx utilities pane? and I'm guessing I have to put my computer through recovery?

I'm not sure what to do with the options: time machine ( I dont think I've used it before?) reinstall osx (it won't let me, it says disk is locked), and the other option is like disk utility or something, which confuses me.

any advice?

There are some problems with the 15" and 17" 2011 models but, from what you describe, you're booting from the screen above? Click on Disk Utility, select your boot drive (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click on the "Verify" button. If you get green text saying the disk appears to be OK, you should be able to restart and get back to your regular sign-in page. If, however, you get red text telling you that the disk needs to be repaired, click on the "Repair" button and see if the disk can be repaired.

Call back with results -> you can get to Safari using the "Get Help Online" option.

I have the 13' but anyway, I clicked disk utility then clicked verify and it said that the disk needs to be repaired, so I clicked the repaired button but it said disk can not be repaired...

so now i don't even know how to back anything up? I dont have anything saved anywhere else really... ( i mean do...but not all my documents and stuff)...

can I still use some sort of usb and get all my documents?? because that's really whats important, all the other applications, music, and pics and what not, don't really matter. i just want my documents... is there a way? to get that stuff off of my laptop now?
