Transferring from windows to mac without iTunes

My Windows PC has not got iTunes and I need to transfer music from the PC to a Mac that I've recently got. Is it possible to transfer the music with an external hard drive? If so how do I format the files so they are compatible with the Mac? Do I need to do the same with the documents and photos I have on the PC to? Sorry I'm not very good at this sort of thing so please write answers in idiot proof! 😝 THANKS!!!!
