I think I solved the issue myself. Could be helpful to others. The key issue was to import the movie using the older iMovie9 and move the individual clips to iMovie10. I proceeded as follows:
1.- Click "Applications".
2.- Open iMovie9, which had been saved (automatically into the "Applications" folder) when loading iMovie10.
3.- Import the movie using iMovie9 into a "New Event". In my case, the clips do not appear in the right time order under iMovie9.
4.- Close iMovie9
5.- Open iMovie10. Create an (empty) "New Event" under iMovie10.
6.- Click on the "Import" arrow, .
7.- Look for the "Movies" folder in the Finder menu, click on "iMovie-Events" folder and on the "New Event". The clips will show up.
8.- Drag the clips (in .mov format) into the iMovie10 "Import" field, corresponding to the "New Event" just created under iMovie10. iMovie 10 will recognize the individual clips and show them in "New Event" when the import is completed.
9.- Edit the "New Event" under iMovie10.
This worked for me for the Sony camera.
