Target Display Mode from Macbook Pro to iMac

I am trying to use my iMac (Late 2009 21.5 inch display) as an external monitor for my MacBook Pro (2010 13 inch display).

The iMac has a Display port and the Macbook Pro has a Thunderbolt port. I purchased a Thunderbolt cable and hooked it up, however when hitting Command+F2 to toggle the Target Display Mode, I get nothing.

Both computers are using OS X 10.9

A couple of questions:

1. Why isn't this working?

2. Do I have the wrong hookup?

3. Are these compatible?

I appreciate any feedback. Trying to get some work done more efficiently.

if your 13-inch MacBook Pro has a Thunderbolt port, then it’s not a Mid 2010 model. If your iMac is a 21-5 inch Late 2009 model, then it doesn’t support Target Display mode; you would need a 27-inch Late 2009 model (or newer) or a 21.5-inch Mid 2011 model (or newer) for that support.
