Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.
iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.3), SL & ML, G4 450 MP w/Leopard, 9.2.2
Tries Everything you sugested and still will on regognize DVD R On My Mac
Then, log into a newly created admin user account and see if the problem persists. If so, then try another DVD player or computer.

Neither brand is highly regarded. Most of us use Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.
You should also try to clean the superdrive with a proprietary lens cleaner that uses tiny brushes.

Depends on where you are. In the UK Verbatim are almost the only brand now on sale apart from supermarket 'own label' rubbish.
You cold try Googling for outlets.
