can you download higher quality music from itunes?

Hi, I have recently become an audiophile and want to get all my library at least 320 kbps. I have three CD's and have them all lossless, but I've spent hundreds of dollars on iTunes and I don't want to rebuy the CD's just to have the quality I want. This also includes music videos, which are unavailable for HD. Its ridiculous that a major seller like iTunes wouldn't allow any customer preferences, and with how much money they get bandwidth should't be a problem. If anyone is having the same problem rate this so that iTunes will actually see it. With the amount of money they make, its about time they start evolving to HD and HQ friendly. Even Youtube does this (to an extent) without purchase.

What does this mean?

What type of equipment are you using?

Why?

Extremely doubtful you can hear any difference between 256 kbps AAC and 320 kbps AAC.

Most of the self-proclaimed "audiophiles" I've encountered won't touch any "lossy" format - for those who do venture in the digital domain lossless "formats" (more correctly containers for blue-book audio) like FLAC or Apple Lossless are the minimum they will tolerate. Many continue to insist on the superiority of vinyl played through astonishingly expensive valve/tube pre-amps and amps and speakers you need to take out a mortgage for :-)

I very much doubt that its part of Apple's business model to start supplying lossless audio alongside the AAC offerings from the iTunes store ... likewise I don't expect Amazon to start selling FLAC downloads alongside 256 or 320kbps mp3s. No-one is going to offer you an "upgrade" to material you've already purchased, any more than you would expect to get a "free" Blueray disc to replace your old DVDs or VHS tapes.

There are individual artists who offer albums and/or live shows for download as FLAC files as well as mp3 - examples that come to mind are the Grateful Dead, Phish and King Crimson, though not surprisingly the lossless downloads are more expensive than the lossy equivalents. If you have a high-end audio system and - if playing from a computer - an external, high-spec digital-to-analog converter you'll probably find the difference between lossless audio and 256/320 kbps AACs or mp3s negligible.
