Why is Aperture unable to back up to a vault?

A Few weeks ago I tried to back up my referenced library (just under 700GB) to mt usual external Drive vault. When I initiate the back up, the spinning wheel appears, Aperture is frozen and I have to Force Quit. I have tried different external drives, including one which is brand new, and the same thing happens. i have had the same thing happen on both a MacBook Pro and a Mini (both latest OS). Aperture is up to date. Please give advice.
