I can't open jar files

Hello.

I'm a Minecraft fanatic and I've been trying to install mods for like forever, but I get stuck when I try to open the .jar files of the mods.

I get this message:

The Java JAR file "<file-name>" could not be launched.

Check the Console for possible error messages.

I can't open any other .jar file on my computer either, which is really annoying. I've checked a lot of other discussions on this forum that ask the same question but none of the answers or suggestions help/work. Is there any way I can fix my computer/jar files so that I can run the files to install them into my game?

Mac OSX 10.8.3

No idea what Java version it is because I can't find Java for some reason. I'm pretty sure I have Java though

If you don't have any icon on System preferences then you don't have it installed or there was an error on the installation. Try again installing it form java http://java.com/es/download/
