Parallels Desktop with Maverick

I previously just used the OS operating system that came with my MACBOOK PRO in 2011, and have Windows 7 loaded with Parallels Desktop that I use for work. I just upgraded to OSx Maverick and now cannot login to Parallels or Windows. It says Parallels is not supported on this type of MAC. I've been using it for 3 years!!

Suggestions?

Hello g8rbyd! Welcome to the Apple Community! I see you were looking for suggestions for your Parallels and Mavericks compatibility issue and kosby hooked you up with the first option of upgrading to a newer version, Parallels Desktop 9. This option is the way to go if you are looking to keep Parallels as a virtual machine that allows Windows or other operating systems to run "side by side" OS X in the same user session. If you are looking for other possible options, there are a few that exist that'd I'd be happy to share with you that may give you some flexibility when looking for a solution.

One would be the Apple supported method of using the OS X Mavericks, Apple Developed and pre installed application Boot Camp, which allows Windows or other compatible operating systems to be installed on a separate partition on the internal hard disk drive. Here is the link to the Apple Boot Camp Support site were you can all the necessary information needed to complete the process >>> http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

Another option that will not require installation of the Windows operating system but allows you to run various Windows applications on your Mac is to use an application called Wine Bottler to create compatible packages of the Windows software you would like to run on your Mac that can then be launched and ran using the Wine Bottler interface or even a shortcut created to keep on your desktop. A very short but very informational functionality overview video is available on YouTube by MacTutorialHelper titled How To Run Windows Programs On Mac For Free With Wine (OS X Mavericks) [2014]. Here is the link >>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkS8i_blVCA

The link to the Wine Bottler developers site is below the YouTube video in the About section.

If you have any questions, feel free to follow and message me!

Hope this helps! Take care!

To clarify further:

Parallels.com is no longer directly selling Parallels Desktop for Mac 8 as an upgrade online.

Yes, buyers might be able to find a copy of older Parallels Desktop for Mac products for sale elsewhere.

For users of Parallels Desktop for Mac versions 6 and earlier, there is no upgrade to Parallels 9 available directly from Parallels.com.

Also note that purchase of a Parallels upgrade requires BOTH the Activation Key for both Parallels 9 and the Activation Key for the prior Parallels version.

Assuming you've registered your prior purchases at Parallels.com, they do store the Activation Key for all prior purchased versions with your registered email and password, so be sure to use the same email address for all registrations.

Purchasing the Parallels 9 product or upgrade allows a one-way move or copy of an existing Parallels 7 or Parallels 8 virtual machine into Parallels 9. I successfully moved both a Windows XP and a Windows 7 virtual machine from Parallels 7 to Parallels 9.

Once opened with Parallels 9, virtual machines are no longer readable by Parallels 7.

And there are other virtual-machine solutions not yet mentioned, including VMWare Fusion and VirtualBox. I've used Parallels Desktop for a few basic Windows applications since 2007 (Desktop version 3) and have had no reason to try the other solutions.

Again, there is no upgrade offer from Parallels 6 to version 9 available directly from Parallels.com.

The full Parallels 9 Desktop for Mac product is $79.99.

The upgrade from 7 or 8 to version 9 is $49.99.

If your time is not particularly valuable, you could probably search out a copy of Parallels 7 or 8 for sale for less than $30, buy it and install it, and THEN purchase the upgrade to Parallels 9 for $49.99, but that's an awful lot of work to save very few dollars.

Occasionally Parallels has been offered as part of a 'software bundle' with several Mac software titles, and the entire bundle might sell for $79 or less, such as this deal, from February 2014, now long ago expired, but if this is your 'business computer', you probably cannot wait until such a bundle appears again, if it ever does.

Of course, be certain that you have multiple backups of your Parallels virtual machine (*.pvm file) BEFORE upgrading.
