iMessage/iCloud Broken?

So I'm baffled I can't figure out how to get my accounts to sync. between my phone and my iMac. For awhile everything was working perfectly and then after one update or another that apple did has screwed something up.

I have tried searching all of the other support issues for resolutions to my problem and have found nothing. It's similar to what others describe, iMessage only sends messages but cannot receive them. I get them just fine on my iPhone 5, but not on my iMac. The solution that is usually given to fix this problem is to enable iMessage on iCloud in your preferences.

My problem is that iMessage doesn't appear in any iCloud managment preferences. And if I select to enable mail it asks me to set up another email address @icloud.com (I'm thrilled that I've already got 50+ email addresses, now I have to remember a password for yet another account?) Is Apple that greedy to have their brand as your email domain?

Hi,

It does seem that the Apple ID used in iMessages in Mavericks has to be an iCloud ID as well.

It was not the case in Messages 7.x.x in Mountain Lion or the beta version that ran from May to December 2012 in Lion.

If...

You had an Apple ID that is an email that is not from Apple (say a Google one for an example) and you linked to be an iCloud Account then you will have received and Apple Email to go with this.

If you did it really close to the end of MobileMe and the start of iCloud then you will have had one that ended @me.com and then later got an @iCloud.com one.

This will mean you can sign in to your On line view of your iCloud account with any one of these "IDs" (using the same Password).

However iMessages will treat them as separate IDs.

Also, using Gail's picture click on the Details button (you will have to Sign in separately) and check the Region or Country setting.

Thanks for the response Ralph, just getting around to replying now. I certainly should have mentioned that I did originally register my apple ID through my gmail account. And also that I'm still running I don't recall ever seeing an email from apple about needing to change to @me.com or @iCloud.com I had been using it just fine until one of the more recent updates that got pushed through. 10.8.5

I'm guessing the solution to all of this is to get an @iCloud.com account, I'll poke around my account while online to try to get one set up- but it's just thrilling- I have to register another email address with another password... Anyway thanks for all the help-

Well what is the suggested solution? I have my gmail as my apple ID, and messages will not accept my username and password even though they're correct. It claims they're incorrect when I know they aren't because I'm posting on here having typed them in. Either that or I don't get to have messages on my imac because Apple wants to be proprietary about something as ridiculous as email. I remember when Steve was still alive and they stood for something, now the place is a ghostship.

Hi,

At the time you did not have to join iCloud with your current Apple ID so you may not of done it.

However at the time those was lots of info that MobileMe as a paid service was coming to an end and was to be replaced by the free Service of iCloud.

As the new service was free I was attracted to signing up.

I used the Apple ID I have been signing to post here with rather than use one of the ones I created on the @mac.com server for iChat.

The Process was similar to signing up an @mac.com account where you listed an external (to Apple) email address in order to have a verification point and recovery email address.

The difference was you could also use existing ID already issued by Apple such as MobileMe accounts and older @mac.com ID that might be linked to MobileMe for mail purposes.

If you current Apple ID is not linked to iCloud you should be able to do that without creating a second Apple ID.

Having a second ID can be fraught with issues as Eric says if you create them when registering a new machine.

On the other hand having separate IDs for Mail and Messages/FaceTime and then again for iTunes can have benefits regarding unwanted spam in the cases of the first two and similar separation like credit cards and pin numbers.

Having said that care needs to be taken when considering what your second (separate) ID is going to be used for.

Hi,

What I was trying to ask and to suggests is:-

Is the current Apple ID actually linked to iCloud ?

If not it seems this needs to be the case to use an Apple ID in Mavericks/Messages 8

Hey Ralph,

Thanks for the patience in responding- I have been looking around AppleID trying to find where my AppleID would link to iCloud. I am currently using Messages 7.0.1 (3322) and trying to set up iMessage by signing in using the same AppleID. In the past I have got emails from iCloud to the same email address regarding requests from friends creating calendar events and what not. Also, when I goto iCloud.com I can sign-in with my the same email.

So to answer your question from what I can tell, yes the appleID I'm using is the same as the appleID I use on iCloud.

Hi,

That does seem odd that you can access the iCloud web page with your Google ID but then it will not work in Messages.

In System Preferences > Network > Advanced Button > DNS tab do you have DNS server listed ?

Some routers will pass on the ones from your ISP and these will be greyed out.

Sometimes the router's own IP is listed (Check the TCP/IP tab) and is most likely one that read 192.168.0.1 or similar.

This will be no good as it is not actually using a server on the internet to resolve the names or Web sites into the IP addresses (Messages taps into this to confirm your contact or Buddy is on the Internet).

If required add a Public DNS server or 2.

Also in System Preferences check the Date and Time pane to make sure it is set to the right time and Time Zone.

Confirm that the router is using the same Time Settings.

Messages uses Time Stamps during the messaging process but also in the set up stages.
