Why QuickTime doesn't work with High Resolution H.264?

I have a MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.8 and QuickTime player 10.0 and an Axis surveillance camera. With the Axis camera that has a capture mode of 3MP 3048x1536 (4:3) @20fps, using H.264 I should be able to achieve the maximum camera resolution of 3048x1536 pixels. Instead the max resolution I can achieve is 800x600 pixels. In other words I miss 3 degrees of resolution. If I use resolutions greater than 800x600 pixels QuickTime stops working and I end up with a totally green screen.

Any explanation why QuickTime doesn' t work for the higher resolutions? And what can I do about it? I use either Safari, Chrome or Firefox to see the camera.

Thanks in advance for any help.
