macbook pro retina not recognising password (mavericks)

i was about to change my password when my mac said the password was incorrect, what do i do or how to i reset it

OS X: Changing or resetting an account password < user password for 10.6 or earlier


Reset the user password in OS X Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks: Apple Support Communities < 10.7 10.8 and 10.9


Or > OS X: Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password
