ipod mini with universal dock/speakers

I've had this problem every time I try to use a universal dock to charge or play my mini. It's happened with the iHome and with the new dock/speakers set I just bought. The dock doesn't charge the mini, and after playing a few seconds of one song, it will go back to the previous screen and freeze there. Nothing works to make it work again until it's disconnected from the dock and left alone for a little while. I have no problem charging the mini with my usb on my computer or with the car charger adapter, but no universal docks will work. I have the latest version of iTunes, the mini is updated, and I always begin with it fully charged from my computer. I'm using the correct docking station adapter (none needed with the speakers). I've tried the 5rs, and any other tips found in the support section, but nothing. I can only play it by hooking it up to the speakers via the headphone jack, which doesn't help keep it charged.

Any ideas? Having a party tomorrow night, and not sure it can play via the headphone jack for 7-8 hrs, even with a fully charged batt . . .

Update~ whenever I put the mini in the dock, it plays for exactly 5 seconds, then freezes. I'm using the right size adapter, etc. Am I the only one with this problem? (The batt did last for the whole party when I played it using the aux/headphone jack.) My warranty is up (last month, of course), so am I just screwed? Sounds like planned obsolescence to me. Please help!
