iPhone 5 frozen on spinning wheel screen

My iPhone 5 has been stuck on the spinning wheel screen for hours, I can't change it at all because my sleep/wake button is not working. I tried holding the home button but nothing is happening. It happened before and I let it die and I just charged it and once I opened my phone it went into the apple logo with the white line under it as if it was updating. Then it went back to the spinning wheel screen.. Help anyone!!! I'm afraid if I turn it on again it will just happen again. 😕
