iPhone 4 locks up when text is received – help!

Hi, I'm hoping someone out there can help me with my dilemma. Frequently (but not always), when I receive a text when my iPhone is not in use, the home screen locks up and I cannot "slide to unlock." I can pull the screen up from the bottom with the shortcut options (camera, calculator, etc.), but then cannot pull it back down or do anything until I power the phone off and reboot it. When I reboot it it unlocks just fine. It's very annoying to have to do this several times a day, not to mention that the person who contacts me wonders why it takes me so long to reply (they don't know I'm having to do a reboot to just unlock the phone). If the phone is in use and unlocked when the text comes in then it doesn't freeze up at all.

Would appreciate it if anyone has suggestions on what the problem might be and how I could fix it. Thanks!

If restarting the device only serves as a temporary fix, then I would recommend moving on to the next troubleshooting step outlined in the article.


  1. If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
    1. Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
    2. If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more aboutrestoring iOS software.
    3. If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
  2. If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
