I currently have iPhoto 7.1.5 on my desktop that is running OS X 10.9.4. If I purchase the iPhoto app at the app store will I be guided on how to transfer my photos to the new iPhoto or does it happen automatically? Also once the new iPhoto is loaded must you remove the old version or does it just upgrade it? thanks
You can first upgrade your iPhoto Library using Apple iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.0. The new iPhoto will also upgrade the library some more. I strongly suggest you make a backup copy or two of your current library just in case.
The old version of iPhoto will be replaced by the new one. You can purchase and download the new iPhoto from the App Store.

Upgrade to Aperture, and you will be able to configure your Metadata overlays in the Browser freely.
