Little help or suggestion windows open while I’m working on a Pages file. Sometimes when I hit the first letter of a word, a little window opens highlighting the letter or the whole word and offering me a definition or asking if I want to delete it or do something else. Most irritating. I don’t need this function. How can I disable it?
What version of Pages on what version of OSX?
Can you post a screensnap of what is happening?
command shift 4 drag over the area you want and the image is saved to your desktop. Add it to your post with the camera icon.

It sounds light you might be control clicking the letter which will bring up a dialogue box to cut, copy, paste, 'look up' etc.

I'm just typing text. Not hitting any control buttons that I can see on the keyboard-- using qwerty only. It happens a lot.
Control click is the equivalent of right click. Your first post said when you hit the letter of a word it highlights the whole word. Now you say when you are keying in words??

It happens when I'm going over text to revise it, using the trackpad and keyboard. Messages are "Cut", "Copy", "Paste", "Spelling and Grammar", etc. They appear in a small window that overlays the file I'm working on. It also happens when I click the upper border of a file to move it to another place on the screen. Then I get different messages, like "Icon and Text", "Icon only", etc. The messages disappear when I click somewhere else on the desktop.
I'm using the latest version of Pages.
I'm using Pages 5.2 on Mavericks on a Macbook Air. I don't know how to do a screen shot. "Help" is useless for such things. I couldn't get a picture of the little window as it disappears when I click elsewhere. But it's a constant interruption. Brief, but add up how often it happens and it wastes a lot of time.
Pressing on the trackpad with two fingers instead of one when selecting text will bring up the dialogue box to 'look up, cut copy paste' etc. Do you think there is a chance that you could be doing that? 'Upper border of file'? Is it a text box or picture box?
I don't know. I wasn't aware of doing it. I generally use one finger to backspace on the reverse direction arrow. I'll consider that and watch for it.

Can you take your Macbook Air to an AppleStore and show them what you are doing?

You're right, Peter. You did. I didn't get what that was about at the time. I wouldn't be able to get a shot of those little windows because they vanish when I click on anything. I sometimes rest my left hand on the computer when I'm doing something only with the right hand and I think I may be unconsciously touching the trackpad when I move back to a word to click on it. I'll watch for that tomorrow. I've had this Mac Air for about a week and haven't used this system before.
You probably would be able to take a shot as the command invokes the screenshot and leaves the screen as was.
command shift 3 takes the entire screen.

I don't know if there's a tech word for it. By upper border I mean the very top, where on the far left you have three buttons to close, etc. I was referring to text files, which are what I mostly use. I've kept watch and you were right. Sometimes as I type or move the cursor I touch the trackpad lightly with my left hand. It was a habit that had no significance until I got into Mavericks and I'm still getting used to this system. Your suggestion solved the mystery for me. Now I need to avoid causing the problem. Thank you much.
My problem wasn't really a tech problem. It was my not knowing the ins and outs of using the trackpad in ways new to me. Thank you for the information on shooting the screen. I've copied them in case I need to do that sometime.
