password change disables gmail on mail
I had to change my gmail p/w as my account was hacked. I have managed to update my iPhone and iPad….not so easy.. but my mail account on my Mac Air is still not accepting the changed password.

I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on what exactly you mean when you say that it's not accepting the changed password. If you mean that it won't allow you to change the password, or you can change it but the change isn't retained, there may be an issue with the Mail entry in your Keychain (where the system stores passwords for various applications and resources).
