Recording music

I would like to start recording songs whilst practicing and writing them, and would like to find out the best way to do this. Would iPad or Mac Book be better, and which programmes/what hardware do I need?

For writing songs would a Mac with GarageBAnd be better than and iPad with GarageBand. The editing options are limited on an iPad.

As to the hardware: What kind of instrument would you want to connect? Microphone, guitar, piano, keyboard?
