I have deleted all my SMS messages and email from my inbox, trash and sent folders on my iPhone 4s. When I check the usage in settings, general it shows that the email usage is 8.2 gb. I do not have any trash, sent mail or mail in my inbox so I am not sure why the usage is so high.

Thanks for your reply. I tried both recommendations with no change to the email usage under settings. I am going to try to delete my email account entirely.
