How to cancel OS X Mavericks installation?

So I wanted to update my mac from 10.6.8 to the most recent update. I downloaded OS X Mavericks and began the installation. However, in the middle of the installation, a message appeared saying I needed to go into disk utilities and repair my disk. When I went to disk utilities, it said the disk (Macintosh HD) could not be repaired. I then looked online and I was told to recover a backup from Time Machine, then delete the disk. The problem is, I've never made a backup. Therefore, there's nothing I can do.

So, is there anyway to cancel the installation?

Restart. Boot off your installation DVD and run Disk Utility Repair Disk and Repair Permission. You may have to hold down the power button to shut the computer down.
